My Dear Wife,
With pleasure I improve this opportunity to inform you that I am well and hope you enjoy the same blessing.
I have not the least particle of news to write to make my letter interesting to you but you say you want me to write often if I do not write more than three lines and here goes one of them.
I did not receive a letter from you by last evening's mail. The mail did not bring Monday's mail from Maine but Friday's mail. I anticipate (it) will bring me intelligence from my loved ones at home.
Isaac'c wife did not write as usual Sunday before last but her sister did and said his oldest boy was sick with sore throat but did not write any paericulars how he was and Isaac feels quite uneasy about him and I understand it is quite sickly there with that complaint. When you write, please write the facts in the case. It is no use for me to write to you to take good care or our little one for I know you will without me asking you to but I hope she will be exempt from that dreadful malady.
Our time seems to be fast drawing to a close and every week bites off quite a piece, yet the time seems to drag heavy by. I suppose it is because I feel very anxious for the time to come when I can come home and enjoy the society of the dear ones that form my home circle. Hom many sweet memories I have of my dear wife and her goodness toward me and the childish glee of my little children but now all that I shall see is child instead of children yet I feel thankful that my lot is no harder than it is for things happen sometimes to mortals that is more worthy of favors than me that sweeps everything and makes them and their homes desolute forever but enough of this point.
Since Sunday the weather has been quite comfortable. The heavens has been cloudy with appearance of rain but there has been no rain yet and it does not look as if there would be any for the sun shines out now bright and warm.
Yesterday I found a little piece of bone and I thought I would make Gussey a little slide to wear on a cord if she has one. It does not look very well but I thought it would please her a little and you can tell her it is to pay for the pretty leaf she sent faver.
I hardly know what to write next. I expect this letter will be to you like some long and dry surmon and you will feel relieved when you hear 15th by and last by. It appears to me that you must have that draw about full of lettersby this time that you wanted me to write enough to fill if I was gone nine months, have you not?
I suppose you know Hiram is papa. If you do not, I do. I know it last week. It is a little girl.
And now my dear wife, I shall have to stop writing but I shall not stop thinking of you my dearest of all things as long as I have thinking qualities and am a same man. So hopeing soon to see you I close.
From your affectionate and loving husband, C.
God bless you my dear. (Charles W Gooch)
