Orrin D. Holmes, 29th Massachusetts Volunteers. Holmes mustered into service on May 22, 1861 and was killed March 25, 1865. The recipient of the letter, Samuel Cole Wright, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions at Antietam on September 17, 1862. Sam was one of the more colorful characters of the 29th. His collection of war artifacts is well known amongst serious collectors today. Sam was hit in the right eye at Petersburg on July 20, 1864. This letter was written to Sam while he was recovering from his wounds.
